A brief history of So Damn Proud
SO DAMN PROUD DEVELOPMENT PERIOD
2015-2017
WORKSHOP & READING #1
So Damn Proud was selected for development by Native Voices at the Autry at the Native Voices 2015 Annual Retreat and Festival of New Plays.
So Damn Proud was one of three plays that received a weeklong development workshop; a meticulously staged reading — directed by Olivia Espinosa with choreography help by lead performer Tonanzin Carmelo — with a presentation at The Autry Museum (Los Angeles), May 28, 2015, and La Jolla Playhouse, May 31, 2015. WORKSHOP READING #2
In October 2016, with the generosity of people who donated (below) and the incredible actors working with workshop director Desiree Prewitt, a second stage reading for So Damn Proud was presented with the help of Northwest Playwrights Alliance in the lobby of the Seattle Repertory Theatre.
A crowdfunding campaign allowed Justin Neal, Shaun Taylor-Corbett and Lily Gladstone to attend the reading in Seattle, and helped the local actors receive honoraria for their time.

So Damn Proud speaks to a desire to create work that honors the inherent beauty that is the fabric of our collective experience in North America.
Specifically, the profound experience of Native Americans living amongst a dominant culture that at times views this living, breathing people as a relic—one objectified as a mascot, a costume, and an entity of the past.
So Damn Proud is often hilarious. Yet, this highly-charged drama digs deep, taking a gritty and poignant look at family.
